Ensuring key personnel are motivated and retained is a major consideration for a number of businesses, whether growing or established. The simple solution of enhanced salaries is often undesirable or unattainable given liquidity requirements for the company and adverse tax implications for the individual, so what else can be done?
A rapidly-expanding client approached us with this dilemma. Being in the technology space, competition for talent is fierce and continuity is key given the knowledge held by the specialists driving progression - they had identified individuals critical to this and sought a way to offer more than pay rises to motivate and retain.
Following consultation with both the client and the employees an EMI scheme was identified as the appropriate route, whereby the tax benefits to both employer and employees would be reinforced by a goal-congruent profitability motive positive to both parties.
After provision of a HMRC-approved business valuation, liaising with legal advisors and preparation of the necessary documentation, the scheme was in place on time and budget.
